About the Reporter/Caller
What we recommend:
1) Report the hack to the platform or application company. 2) If your account cannot be returned or fixed, create a new account with stronger passwords. 3) SGS can help you draft a statement to share on social media (in situations where you think things were shared on your accounts).
1) Put the device in airplane mode, shut off internet access. 2) Get a different device. 3) If you want to use the same device, you need to start new: You need to change all passwords, reset Apple ID password (you can do this through Apple’s website), and then completely reset the device. 4) Change credit card numbers, especially if you have your cards stored in your device (hacker might have access to that card information).
Someone has an image of me, and threatening to put it out online (image that has been compromised) = 1) Have they threatened to harm you? 2) Are they asking for money, or more pictures? - If YES: This is extortion. WHAT TO DO: 1) Put the device in airplane mode, do not communicate further. 2) Don’t delete the threat, or messages. This is illegal, see NE Statute below.
Have they threatened to share it on your social media? = YES 1) Don’t delete the threat, or messages. This is illegal, see NE statute below.
1) Do you know the perpetrator? = Yes, and they are local, then report to local. = No, or it is crossing state lines, report to FBI.
DISCLAIMER: law enforcement or FBI will probably take the device.
How SGS can help: 1) Help them with crisis statement to share on social media (in situations where you think things were shared on your accounts). 2) Help them establish new settings on new or exsisting devices.
1) Is it happening through your device? If so, you need a new device. Can you do that? YES) Shut off the device in a different location than your home or work, and get rid of the device. NO) You need to change your Apple ID, and completely factory reset your phone. Do you have any old devices that you can use in the meantime? If so, you can use that device and download a WIFI texting app or WhatsApp.
2) Is it happening through a listening device? Or at home? AirTag?) Go to the nearest police station and tell them. Something in home?) Contact someone that can sweep your house and check for those devices.
IF WE ARE SPEAKING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL: Has the client given mental health professional permission to talk with us? Is the proper paperwork completed on their end to show that permission?
Has there been a threat? Has there been a legal threat? Have they told you or the minor to self harm? Threatened to expose an image or information? Has there been threats to family? IF THERE HAS BEEN THREATS: Report to local law enforcement. (If the other person is a classmate, and there is a threat, the school needs to know about it.)
IF A MINOR IS REPORTING CYBERBULLING: Do you know who the person is? Do you have a trusted adult or support system? Make sure there is a caregiver involved. (If the other person is a classmate, and there is a threat, the school needs to know about it.) WHAT TO DO: Report the messages, account. Block user, do not be bated into more communication with that individual. WHAT WE CAN DO: We could do a social media reset to make sure there are privacy settings. Potential mediation: We can offer to mediate between families.
